How to decorate your home for the holidays on a budget.

Holiday decorating doesn't have to be expensive

The holidays are a time for family, friends, and of course, decorating. But if your budget is tight this year, don’t worry. There are plenty of ways to make your home look festive without spending a lot of money. One of the best parts about the holidays is getting to decorate your home and make it feel extra cozy. Get creative with what you already have. Chances are, you have some hidden treasures just waiting to be used.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

-Use an old door as a headboard or a table. Just placing a nice festive tablecloth is an easy one. Something different is getting a white one and put the kids to work coloring their own designs

-Hang curtains from the ceiling instead of the windows. This creates a segmented look allowing you to display a different style to each section just don't go overboard.

-Paint an old piece of furniture or accent wall in a bright color. Changing the colors in your home is a great way to spice up your season.

-Turn an unused closet into a reading nook or tiny Christmas village. This only works if you have enough room to move in there but can create a nice hideaway spot that you can design it any way you want.

-Use wallpaper or contact paper to give plain walls some personality. For this one I would not go all over your house but in a certain area that has a mundane look to it now could be a wonderful change to your overall scheme. I have seen some very eye-catching designs using ribbon and wrapping paper.

Shop at thrift stores and dollar stores

When it comes to decorating your home on a budget, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you save money. One of the best ways to save money is to shop at thrift stores or dollar stores for items like picture frames, vases, and other small home décor items. You can also look for sales at your local home improvement store or online retailers. Another way to save money is to DIY some of your own home décor items. You can repaint old furniture, frame artwork you already own, or even sew your own curtains or pillows. Whatever route you choose, with a little creativity and effort, you can decorate your home on a budget.

Make your own decorations

Homemade decorations are a great way to add your own personal touch to your home décor on a budget. Here are some tips for making your own decorations: Use recycled materials you have lying around the house. For example, if you have empty wine bottles, use them to make a candle holder or Christmas tree ornament by filling them with water and adding food coloring or sand of different colors. Scraps of ribbons or shoelaces wrap some items very nicely.

Greenery: Any type of greenery will do, but we recommend going with the less common (and slightly harder to find) varieties like ferns, philodendrons, orchids and even moss. Scatter them on the floor and around the house or arrange them in a vase. Flowers: Roses, tulips and orchids are very festive, but you can also get creative with other flowers like pansies and peonies.

Choose simple projects that you can complete in a short amount of time. Let your child help you with the project and don’t worry if it doesn’t come out looking exactly like what is pictured in the book. When doing a DIY you're not going for a masterpiece, so feel free to be creative and make it your own. Keep in mind that the shelf will be on display, so make sure it looks good. Dusted and well-lit spaces allow you to display pieces with intricate details. Ask family and friends to help you with your projects – it’s more fun to make decorations together.

Take your time and enjoy the process. The finished product will be all the more special because of the time and effort you put into it.

Use natural materials

When it comes to decorating your home, there are plenty of ways to do so on a budget. One way is to use natural materials. This can include anything from using stones and rocks as decoration to incorporating branches and leaves into your design. Not to mention anything else some of the most interesting designs can be made of things you least expect. Rocks and stones can be used to create a beautiful walkway through your garden. If you have the area covered, you can use wrapping paper on the rocks temporarily to create that wonderland looking walkway as your guests enter. You should consider using something like pebbles or river rocks as they are inexpensive and easy to obtain.

There are many different ways that you can decorate your home for the holidays. You can go all out and deck every single inch of your house in holiday cheer, or you can keep it more subdued with just a few simple decorations. No matter what route you decide to go, the most important thing is that you have fun and enjoy yourself during this festive time of year! With a wreath on the front door, you are ready to accept as much Christmas cheer as your cup can hold.
